Northern State Hospital: Washington's Most Haunted Asylum
Northern State Hospital operated near Sedro-Woolley from 1912 to 1976. During its peak, it housed over 2,700 patients — many committed involuntarily for conditions we'd now recognize as depression, anxiety, or simply being "difficult." Over 1,500 patients died during the hospital's operation.
The dead were buried in the facility's cemetery, many in unmarked graves with only numbered stakes. When the hospital closed, the cemetery was largely abandoned. Today, the grounds are partially used as a park, but the old buildings and cemetery remain.
Paranormal investigators have called Northern State one of the most active locations in the Pacific Northwest. EVP recordings have captured voices pleading for help, calling out names, and asking "Where am I?" Temperature anomalies are constant — cold spots that move through rooms and follow investigators.
Local residents report seeing lights in the windows of the abandoned buildings and hearing screams carried on the wind from the direction of the cemetery.
"Over 1,500 people died there, many after years of suffering," Captain Ron says quietly. "Some were subjected to experimental treatments. Many were simply forgotten. If any place has earned the right to be haunted, it's Northern State."
