Wolf Haven's Midnight Howls: Wolves, or Something Else?
Wolf Haven International, located just south of Olympia near Tenino, is a sanctuary for displaced wolves. It's a beautiful place where visitors can hear wolves howl during special programs. But staff and neighbors have reported hearing howls that don't belong to any of their animals.
The unaccounted howls come from the deep woods to the east — long, mournful calls that are subtly wrong. Wolf biologists note that the pitch and duration don't match gray wolves, red wolves, or any hybrid. The calls seem to come from something with a larger lung capacity.
Native Nisqually stories tell of the "Shadow Wolves" — spirit animals that patrol the boundary between the physical world and the spirit world. They're said to howl at the edges of sacred places, warning the living not to venture too deep.
Motion-activated cameras in the surrounding forest have captured blurry images of canid-like figures that are significantly larger than any known wolf species in the region. One image, taken in 2023, shows what appears to be a wolf-like animal standing on its hind legs.
"I've worked with wolves my entire career," Captain Ron says. "What I heard that night in the woods near Wolf Haven — that wasn't a wolf."
