Centralia, Washington — The Bloody Crossroads
Lewis County · Population ~18,000
Centralia sits at the crossroads of I-5, halfway between Portland and Seattle. It's known for antique shopping and the world's largest egg. But Centralia has one of the darkest histories of any small town in America — from the Centralia Massacre of 1919 to the haunted Olympic Club hotel.
Why Centralia Is Strange
The 1919 Centralia Massacre — a violent clash between the American Legion and the IWW (Wobblies) — left multiple dead and one man, Wesley Everest, was lynched from a railroad bridge. His ghost is said to walk the Chehalis River bridge to this day.
